Quarantine Life: A Few Positive Impacts of Locking Down for Covid-19

Jerry Johnson • Apr 24, 2020
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all of our lives, and for some it has been devastating. Our hearts go out to everyone who has lost a loved one or struggled with illness, stress, and financial difficulty. We’re praying for healing, and a quick end to the virus. While it’s been hard to see the daily news reports of sickness, deaths, and unemployment figures; it has been encouraging to see throughout social media how so many people are turning a negative situation into an opportunity to do something positive. We’re thankful for all of the good things happening as a reaction to the uncertainty and danger - people helping each other, adapting with creative solutions, and making sacrifices for the greater good.

Here are a few of the positive themes that have jumped out at us recently:

Perspective
As the world is collectively clinging to the health and safety they have, many of us in the developed countries are reminded how we normally take for granted that not only are our basic needs met, but we actually live in an embarrassment of riches as compared to impoverished or war-torn areas. As we keep our safe distance from family and friends we long for a return to the good ‘ol days of spending time together, and realize the simplest joys of our relationships are the things we cherish most on this earth.

Renewed Appreciation for Medical Professionals
We’re fortunate to have a dedicated force of medical professionals that have always been there for us. However, it usually takes a disaster striking for our gratitude to kick in. We’re happy to see #frontline workers are getting some love and recognition lately, and we promise to do better in the future!

Conserving Resources
The stay at home orders and limited access to stores and supplies have helped us look at our consumption differently. We’re learning a hard lesson in not expecting money and supplies to be available without interruption. We’re asking questions like “Could I use less toilet paper?” and “Do I actually need paper towels?”

How many zoom conversations have gone something like, “I’ve been wearing the same three shirts for four weeks..” It is refreshing to narrow down clothing and belongings versus thinking about all the things we “need to purchase. Staying at home gives us time to optimize our personal space and things, like an exercise in #minimalism, and borrowing ideas on living small from #vanlife.

Reading (and watching) (and listening)
This quarantined chapter of our lives is perfect for a reboot of our content consumption. With life feeling so different, it feels natural to seek a fresh start. We can reignite a voracious appetite for books and other content to educate, stimulate, inspire or just entertain.  See our previous post on Our Favorite Movies and TV Shows.

We can ask ourselves not just “What looks good on Netflix?” But maybe go a step further, asking, “What am I hoping to gain or learn from the content I consume?”  Now is an ideal time to dive into the all time best-seller, the Bible.  You can find an easy plan to guide you through the entire Bible in a year.

Exercise
Have you noticed the trails and sidewalks are busier than usual? With gyms closed, it seems everyone has picked up running, walking or biking. Thankfully, we can get outside to enjoy the fresh air while keeping distance. There is also a wealth of fitness content online, such as video workouts that can be done at home with little or no equipment.

Here's a workout with no jumping, perfect for not disturbing your housemates and neighbors.
Hang in there!
We at Nesh hope you are staying healthy and happy, and would love to hear what you’re doing to stay connected and well. Share your ideas and activities on IG @nesh_design

Niguel Donuts owners, husband and wife team Tony and Mony, overcame enormous hardship to make a new life in the United States and establish their business to provide for their family. Their story of survival, determination and integrity was recently told to us by their daughter, Chhary, who has been running the store with her husband, Jeff, since 2019 when Mony was injured.

In doing some networking with Orange County Realtors Association, Lisa and I ran into a friend we hadn’t seen in a long time - Daniel Fennell. It was great to see Daniel and catch up, and talk about how we could collaborate to help our clients market their businesses. Since that meeting, we’ve been able to team up and use Daniel’s skills of capturing properties and people in our websites and marketing campaigns. Daniel is the owner of Fennell Media, specializing in videography and photography for real estate.

This week, we're excited to introduce you to James Beard finalist, Chef Justin Carlisle. Justin is the owner and driving force behind @ardentmke . If you haven't been to Ardent, you are missing out on one of the best dining experiences you will ever have. Chef Justin and his wife also own, @redlightramenmke and @thelaughingtacomke . Each restaurant offers authentic flavors that will have you coming back for me. ⠀ ⠀ What inspired you to open Ardent? ⠀ "Five years ago I opened Ardent as a small tasting menu restaurant. Not always the smartest thing to open first. A lot of it was a dream, also an ambition and I was getting to that age to do it and take a risk, or not do it." ⠀ What's your big dream for your Ardent? ⠀ "We have multiple businesses since opening Ardent, including Red Light Ramen, as well as my wife opening Laughing Taco. Hopefully the businesses will provide security for myself and my family later in life. At some point down the road, another dream is to be able to slowly hand over our businesses to partners and employees who have been with us. They can one day create their own visions because those people have helped make the restaurants what they are today."⠀ ⠀ What's your favorite thing about doing business in Milwaukee?⠀ "I like the size of Milwaukee, right around 600,000 people and I think a lot of people in our industry are moving to mid-sized cities. This is largely because it’s a lot more feasible to create the dream here. In Milwaukee, we’re still in a transition stage. I’ve seen it over the past 8 years I’ve been here. It is blue collar but also getting revitalized. It’s great to be a part of that change and giving the public more options." ⠀ Thank you, Chef Justin Carlisle for sharing your story! ⠀
