Small Business Feature  - The National Cafe

Lisa Johnson • Oct 25, 2018

This week, we're excited to share with you Nell's story. We love brunching at @thenationalcafe and admire Nell's heart for Milwaukee. ⠀

What's the story behind you taking over ownership of The National Cafe?⠀
"I think it's every chef's dream to start their own business. I was given a special opportunity to take over The National Cafe, when it was sold in a competition for a small fee. The previous owner wanted someone to take over who would continue to grow it and invest in the emerging neighborhood. Our visions aligned, and it was sold to me in Nov., 2011. While it was daunting to suddenly have my own business, I knew I could do it, and my hunger for it outweighed the fear of the unknown."⠀

What's your big dream for The National?
"So often, restaurateurs get a little taste of success and the human response is to want more- bigger and better! Expansion usually ensues, and perhaps more locations. At The National we are a tiny well-oiled machine, and while we have grown with catering, we have no plans to expand. I love the communal vibe that we have, the regulars we serve, and the friendly staff who have been there with me for years. Why mess with a good thing?"⠀

What's your favorite thing about doing business in Milwaukee?
"My favorite thing about having a restaurant in Milwaukee is the sense of community it has brought me. I work with many non-profits in the area, donating time and product to help bring awareness to their causes. We have a strong sense of giving in this city. I love the kindness and authenticity of Midwesterners, and Milwaukeeans in particular, and I'm honored to be able to nourish them."⠀

Thanks for sharing your story with us, Nell!

Niguel Donuts owners, husband and wife team Tony and Mony, overcame enormous hardship to make a new life in the United States and establish their business to provide for their family. Their story of survival, determination and integrity was recently told to us by their daughter, Chhary, who has been running the store with her husband, Jeff, since 2019 when Mony was injured.

In doing some networking with Orange County Realtors Association, Lisa and I ran into a friend we hadn’t seen in a long time - Daniel Fennell. It was great to see Daniel and catch up, and talk about how we could collaborate to help our clients market their businesses. Since that meeting, we’ve been able to team up and use Daniel’s skills of capturing properties and people in our websites and marketing campaigns. Daniel is the owner of Fennell Media, specializing in videography and photography for real estate.
